Jennifer Stewart Griffith was born in Logan, Utah, and raised on a dairy farm in the Idaho part of Cache Valley, where she moved sprinkler pipe, fed calves, and high-pressure-sprayed the milking parlor free of manure every morning. It was perhaps not a glamorous upbringing, but a healthy one. She studied English at nearby Utah State University so she could go home on Sunday afternoons for her mother’s dinners and to raid the Stewart family pantry. During that time she also traveled (stumbled) through Europe with her roommates. It couldn’t be termed backpacked because none of them had backpacks, just suitcases. There’s a reason people use backpacks, the hapless girls soon learned. Suitcases get pretty heavy pretty fast. Later, she spent a year on two different U.S. Senate campaigns (one successful!), and served as a missionary in the Japan Tokyo North mission, where she had a lot of fun companions and met some awesome people from lots of countries and learned to speak Japanese just well enough to understand the occasional phrase on “Iron Chef” and “Ninja Warrior” these days. After graduation she worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., where she (frighteningly) managed the computer systems for a congressional office. This simply meant she knew the 800 number for the help line and was the office’s designated caller of tech support. During this time she finally met Gary, who was attending law school and took practically forever to propose (11 months.) They married three weeks later and now live in Arizona, where Gary is a judge and they are raising their five young children. Besides being a mom, Jennifer enjoys reading, avoiding yard work, making and eating desserts, and watching moviesand, of course, writing. “I am so grateful to my husband, Gary, for encouraging me to start writing for pleasure. It’s been something I have come to cherish as a way to express myself, especially as a mother to young children, where I sometimes wonder if my brain has turned into that grayish purple play dough they’re mashing on the kitchen table. I may just be writing cotton candy for the LDS woman's soul, but it keeps life fun. And it’s a joy.” Someday, Jennifer would like to travel to far off places, but for now, a trip to the temple every so often will sufficewith a little bit of Target and Ikea on the side. Her three novels include Choosing Mr. Right (2004), A Little Sisterly Advice (2006), and Delicious Conversation (2007). She loves to hear from readers, and you can contact her via public_relations@springcreekbooks.com. |
