The Role of the Spirit in Our Writing

by Julia Griffin
Secretary, Southeast Scribes Chapter

The Spirit plays a big role in our writing. All of us have writing talents and skills. The Lord expects us to develop them that we might be a blessing to others and ourselves.

In order to develop these talents and skills we need to have a desire to do so. We also have to work at our writing and then invite the Spirit to be with us in this process.

Alma reminds us in Mosiah 18:10 how we can do this. He says that we are witnesses before God and that we have entered into a covenant to "serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you."

If we are serving God and keeping his commandments with all our hearts we are in a position to have the Spirit with us more abundantly each day. However, this does not guarantee us to be good writers. We must also walk to the edge of the light and take the first step into the darkness or unknown, exercising our faith and good works.

As we live daily we experience joy, sorrow, laughter and pain. We seek the Spirit's influence to solve challenges, gain knowledge, and serve others. We gain compassion and understanding. We carry a notebook and pencil with us and write each day of our experiences.

We realize that the Spirit has blessed us and helped us to achieve our goals in writing. We continue the process and are given more light and truth. We improve as writers and are more grateful for the talent the Lord has given us to develop and use in blessing and inspiring others and ourselves.
