Write Here. Write Now. Write Away.

by Margaret Turley

The mission of ANWA is to be a unique network for LDS women interested in writing. It is designed to encourage, assist, and motivate published and unpublished writers to keep writing.

To paraphrase Elder Packer's theme in [the latest] Conference, "That's What Grandfathers and Grandmothers Do," my subject is "That's What ANWA Writers Do."

  1. We write article for magazines, newspapers, church newsletters and publications of many types. This includes writing minutes from chapter meetings for the newsletter. (If you've ever contributed to Of Good Report, you are a published writer!)
  2. We write journals. Some of us share journal entries. I've been inspired by much of what I've read on the ANWA critique line, especially Mary Ellen Simmons' work.
  3. We write fiction. Several of our members are popular published authors in the LDS and national markets.
  4. We write non-fiction. We applaud the historians like Linda Whiting, journalists like Terry Montague, and gospel experts like Gayla Wise and Marlene Muchnick.
  5. We write self-help and how-to books like Pamela Wiggins' "Why Should I Nurse My Baby?"
  6. We write poetry, lyrics, and music. We are edified by members like Joan Sowards, who has written numerous gospel-oriented songs, and music for "The Proclamation of the Family;" and Amy Wadsworth, whose song is on a CD.
  7. We write for contests. We are proud of winners like Becky Rohner, who teamed up with her daughter, Mischa Borgnaes, to write the first prize-winning audio book, A Heart Full of Diamonds.

I have a new reason to write. I will soon be a grandmother. I want my grandchildren to know what challenges I faced, how I overcame them, or why I didn't. I want them to know my testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, our Savior. I want my grandchildren to go into battle, as they most certainly will, like the sons of Helaman. I desire that they be taught by their mothers—and grandmothers—that if they do not doubt, God will deliver them.

May we all find a purpose and desire to share our knowledge, hopes, and dreams. Write because you are heppy. Write because you are sad. Write because you want to. Write because you are mad.

Most important of all: WRITE!
