Getting the Most
from a
Writers Conference

by Kerry Blair

(Because nobody else in all of ANWA submitted an article this month. Hint. Hint.)

Whether your plans include the ANWA conference in October, or a slightly larger gathering—say Maui in the spring—there are a few tips experts seem to agree will get the you most bang for your conference bucks. Here are a few suggestions from several writers magazines:

Choose Your Workshop Wisely

Don't go to a class just because it's being taught by an expert, or worse, a friend. Choose the workshops that best suit the writing you are doing now—or the writing you want to try in the future. Look for subjects that will not only bolster your skills as a writer, but will enhance your writing experience, boost your confidence, and open horizons you've never before explored.

Make a New Friend. Make a Dozen!

Go early. Stay late. Ask others about their work. Ask what has been successful for them. The workshop presenters may not even be your best source of really great ideas. Talk to everybody you can. (No, listen to everybody you can!) But do take alond a handful of business cards. There may be someone there who needs just what you have to offer.

Take Note!

Show up prepared. Take notes in classes. Take notes between classes. Jot down every bit of serendipity that comes your way. Grab every handout and piece of paper offered—you can figure out later what they're for! Most importantly, review and use those notes when you get back home.

Be a Great Student

Laugh at the presenters' jokes. Applaud enthusiastically at the end. If invited, ask clear, concise, thought-provoking questions. Participate in discussions. Hang around for the book signing to chat with any author whose work you admire. Is there a key to their success? You'll never know if you don't ask!

Relax & Have Fun

There are no assignments, no grades, and now way to fail to have a great time. Be yourself and be friendly and you'll be glad you went!
