Meet the Presidency

The Executive Officers of ANWA for 2008 are:

  • President - Lorna Hale
  • Vice President - Stephanie Abney
  • Secretary - Connie Wolfe
  • Treasurer - Cindy R. Williams
  • Membership Secretary - Marsha Ward

Lorna Hale
President
President Lorna Hale is serving the two-year term for 2007-2008. She says:

I joined ANWA several years ago through my sister, Connie Wolfe. I have 7 grandkids, work in the mortgage industry, and have been married to Robert for 35 years. I also earned my Woodbadge recently, and have been a Cub Scout Den leader for 2½ years.

I served as the President of Southeast Scribes for two years and now enjoy being Executive President.

My writing covers poetry, science fiction, murder mysteries and essays. I have even dabbled in some romance writing. I love all books—they call to me, as my husband, who has moved that library more than once, will attest to! I especially enjoy researching an article or the way to kill someone or a location or particular setting for a book.

One of my goals for ANWA is to double in membership—and we are seeing growth. Thank you all for what you do.

Stephanie Abney
Vice President
Vice President Stephanie Abney is serving the 2008-2009 term.

Stephanie was born and raised in Southern California. She met her husband of 38 years in a college snowball fight at BYU. They now reside in Mesa, AZ. She is the mother of five children (four living) and has fourteen grandchildren.

Stephanie loves to write and has been a member of American Night Writers for many years. She has been published in various literary magazines; a local newspaper (Arizona Beehive); the nationally syndicated “good news” insert, The Front Porch; and in Woman’s World magazine. Stephanie has won both national and international writing contests. Two of her essays appear in the book, By Small and Simple Things. She wrote, edited and published her own conservative grassroots political newsletter, called Stephanie Says So, in the late 80’s, and is a frequent contributor to ANWA’s newsletter Of Good Report.

An eternal optimist, Stephanie is a substitute teacher and in recent years returned to school to study computer graphic arts, screenwriting and the Native American Flute.

Connie Jo Wolfe
Secretary/Treasurer
Secretary Connie Jo Wolfe is serving the 2007-2008 term.

Connie has been with ANWA for over six years. She has served on the Executive Board previously as Treasurer and as Vice President, served as Secretary/Treasurer, and now is the Secretary. She is a member of Salt River Scribes Chapter.

Connie is the mother of two grown sons who are supportive of her writing goals. She retired in March 2007 to be able to divide her time between care giving for her elderly father, who resides with her, and furthering her writing career.

She is having a difficult time determining what her genre is since she enjoys most every one. Retirement is allowing her to set a four-hour-a-day writing schedule so that she can complete one of her ‘masterpieces’. She has shelved the historical fiction, the mystery, the woman’s fiction and the romance in order to concentrate on her fantasy novel. Of course, that’s subject to change as inspiration strikes.

ANWA has provided the encouragement and support to finally realize her life-long goal of being a writer. The ultimate writing dream is to be published and hope that some feelings and/or words that she shares might help a reader find joy in the moment, strength through their trials and hope for their future.

Cindy R. Williams
Treasurer
Treasurer Cindy R. Williams is serving the 2008-2009 term.

Cindy has been a member of ANWA for two years. She just published her first book for young children, Chase McKay Didn't Get Up Today, through Goodfellow Press. Cindy has five other children's books in line to be published. She is also completing her trilogy, Thundertail's Tale, about the adventures of a dragon and a boy as they save the world from the Secret Sinister Society. Cindy is also an accomplished Harpist and a member of the Arizona Harp Society. She will include a harp CD of her original music titled, "Dragon Songs" to coincide with the release of Thundertail's Tale.

Cindy lives in Arizona with her family and enjoys snow and water skiing, synchronized swimming, and chasing her five children. Her family is her spark of inspiration and the miracle of her life.

Says Cindy, "The opportunity to network with other LDS women writers has been incredible. It is comforting to find other mothers that write late at night when the family is nestled safely in bed, and that it really isn't strange to jump out of bed at 4:00 am to jot down a dream, or a solution to a plot problem that comes in the wee quiet hours.

Marsha Ward
Membership
Secretary
Membership Secretary Marsha Ward is serving the 2007-2008 term. Marsha founded American Night Writers Association in 1986; was mentor, coach, and facilitator of the group for many years; then served as the first President and twice as Secretary-Treasurer. In addition to ANWA, Marsha is a member of Western Writers of America, LDStorymakers, and Romance Writers of America.

Marsha is an award-winning writer, poet, and novelist who has published over 900 articles, columns, poems, and short stories. She has been a writer and editor for four different LDS newspapers. Well-known as a mentor, Marsha enjoys working with other writers as a creative consultant, editor, workshop presenter, contest judge, and teacher. She taught creative writing at Washington Irving School and newspaper writing at Carmel Charter School.

She now lives in the central mountains of Arizona in a small hamlet: tall pine trees, abundant birds, small animals and elk, and no traffic lights, but also no gas station and no broadband Internet! Ah well, those are minor annoyances. She enjoys giving readings and doing book signings for her romantic Western adventure novels, family gatherings with her children and grandchildren, and traveling.

Marsha has published two novels in "The Owen Family Adventures" series: The Man from Shenandoah and Ride to Raton. The third novel of the series, Trail of Storms, will be published soon. She also contributed chapters to two nonfiction books, LDS Storymakers Writing Secrets and LDS Storymakers Publishing Secrets. Marsha is working on a novel set in Central Arizona in the 1890s.
